Mid Michigan Waste Authority – Public Area Recycling Project

Public Area Recycling Project

Single use beverage containers are a rapidly growing segment of the plastic beverage container stream. Many of these beverages are consumed outside the home, at sporting events, while shopping, while traveling, etc. These containers are made from plastic resin, # 1 PETE, which is recyclable across the nation. As well, paper and paper goods are a huge component of most office waste streams, with government entities generating a huge amount in many departments daily operations. Paper is one of the most easily available recycled content products.

The project objective is to develop various pilot projects to capture and divert applicable recyclables from public areas, such as single use beverage containers and paper goods, and divert for recyclables processing, while simultaneously increasing public awareness of recycling. These programs aimed at being sustainable and offer others the ability to modify and duplicate the project to work in their community or organization.

MMWA has provided technical support and funding for collection containers and educational signage to the following organizations:

  • Children’s Zoo at Celebration Square, Saginaw (2007)
