The following holidays are observed by MMWA’s collection hauler and may impact solid waste collection services in MMWA member communities, following these guidelines:

• Weekday holidays cause a one-day delay for that day and each weekday thereafter in the holiday week
• If a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, there is no delay in service

Observed Holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Beginning April 2, 2012, City of Saginaw residents can get into Recycle-Motion!

The City will begin bi-weekly curbside recycling services to single through 4-unit City dwellings through MMWA’s Recycle-Motion program.  The Saginaw Recycles!/2 Step – 2 Bin recycling program allows for easy, 2-step recycling:

Step 1 - glass, metal and plastics are recycled together in one bin.

Step 2 - paper materials, cardboard and boxboard are mixed in another bin or put into paper bags next to the recycling bin.

Recycling day assignments and complete program details will be provided residents on information cards delivered door-to-door.

To make it easier for residents to pick up a recycling bin or two, the City will distribute bins at two separate events held at four (4) sites in March 2012. The first bin per address will be FREE at these events.  Locations for the bin distribution events to be announced. Bins can be purchased at the City of Saginaw Dept of Public Services at any time following March 13.

• Set trash cans, bags and recycling bins on flat surfaces only. Containers set in snow banks create a slip and fall hazard and may not be collected.
• Set trash out in bags instead of in trash cans to reduce litter and keep your trash can from rolling and becoming a traffic hazard.
• Place white trash bags in open view so they won’t blend into the snow and get missed.
• Consider waiting to set out materials until the following week when weather and road conditions have improved.

1. Set out yard waste for pick up by 7 am.

2. Place leaves, pumpkins and decorative vegetation into paper yard waste bags or a 33-gallon can labeled with a YARD WASTE sticker. Free stickers are available from your municipal office or MMWA.  There is a 50 pound weight limit per bag or container.

3. No yard waste accepted in plastic bags.

November 15 is America Recycles Day, the culmination of hundreds of activities and events around the nation created to draw attention to the importance of recycling and buying recycled products.  This annual day of commitment to recycling is organized by America Recycles Day, Inc. And its partners in a public-private, non-profit group whose only goal is to see recycling realize its maximum potential in America.  The State of Michigan, through the Michigan Recycling Coalition, has partnered with America Recycles Day, Inc. In its annual campaign to encourage Americans to recycle and buy-recycled products.  As part of the campaign, people throughout Michigan will participate in various activities and events leading up to America Recycles Day.

Each year Mid Michigan Waste Authority celebrates America Recycles Day with a number of activities.  Many of the 35 member communities recognize the importance of recycling and purchasing recycled content products by passing resolutions and proclamations.  Residents make a promise to recycle by making a commitment on a pledge card.  Everyone who makes a commitment is entered to win great prizes from Mid Michigan Waste Authority.

Whether you win a prize our not, when you recycle we all win.

Get into Recycle-Motion! Hundreds of thousands of Americans will be celebrating America Recycles Day at events across the nation this fall. Mid Michigan Waste Authority (MMWA) joins the campaign by sponsoring their annual 4R Recycling Round Up.

The 4R Recycling Round Up will take place during the Halloween Harvest Zoo Boo, Saturday, October 29 from 4-8pm and Sunday, October 30 from 1-5 pm at the Children’s Zoo at Celebration Square in Saginaw. Bring the family out for trash-to-treasure crafts and

free goodies, plus, everyone making a written pledge to recycle will be entered to win great prizes. A local child will win a new bike, compliments of ReCommunity and adults will have a chance to win unique recycled products compliments of MMWA.

The Halloween Harvest Zoo Boo provides a fun, safe Halloween experience filled with treats, free train and carousel rides, and educational programs sponsored by various local organizations. Discounted tickets are available through October 21 by calling the Zoo at 989-759-1408.

E-Waste Recycling Days
Load up those old computers, televisions, and household electronic devices and bring them to the FREE E-Waste Recycling Days between 9am and 1pm.  For your convenience, three days are being offered for drop-off, no appointment is necessary and the event is open to residents, businesses and schools.
