Saginaw, MI —– Recycling helps preserve the earth was the main message over 275 Saginaw County students artistically expressed in colorful posters submitted in response to Mid Michigan Waste Authority’s (MMWA) annual Recycle, For Earth’s Sake poster contest.

The Authority offers this yearly poster contest as part of its efforts to promote awareness of Earth Day (April 22) and the benefits of recycling. Fourteen winners were selected from the many posters received, and as their prize, will receive their winning design printed on a t-shirt made, in part, from recycled beverage bottles. The winning designs will be on display at MMWA’s Go Wild! Celebrate Earth Day event on Saturday, April 28 from 10 am to 2 pm at the Children’s Zoo at Celebration Square in Saginaw.

The poster contest was open to any child from age 5 to 13. Many teachers include the poster contest as part of their environmental science curriculum focused on recycling. Entries were received from a number of schools across the 35 municipalities who are members of MMWA. “It is gratifying to see the interest area youth have in protecting the environment through smart trash handling,” said Monica Duebbert, MMWA General Manager. “It is exciting to see how many students really get the recycling message. You know this is a lesson they relate to, and our hope is that they will go home and teach their family to recycle.”

SAGINAW, MI —– Go Wild! and celebrate Earth Day with Mid Michigan Waste Authority (MMWA) and the Children’s Zoo at Celebration Square on Saturday, April 28 from 10 am – 2 pm. This annual Earth Day event at the Children’s Zoo in Saginaw promises a fun-filled, environmentally focused day for kids of all ages. The first 500 people get in free by bringing a recyclable beverage container; otherwise, Zoo admission is $5.00 for all ages.

The eco-experience begins before you even get inside the zoo gates. Unwanted paint can be recycled at a drop-off in the front parking area with Habitat for Humanity ReStore Saginaw. Half full cans of latex and oil-based paint in the original container can be dropped off for reuse by Restore. To recycle those beverage containers from zoo-comers, a Waste Management recycling truck will also be parked at the entrance gate.

Then it’s time to Go Wild! inside the Children’s Zoo, featuring all the regular zoo exhibits and activities, plus face painting, temporary tattoos, games, educational exhibits and trash-to-treasure crafts. Learn from MMWA and a variety of Earth Day Partners about recycling, backyard and worm composting, water protection and more. Winning designs from MMWA’s Recycle for Earth’s Sake children’s poster contest will also be on exhibit.

Kids age 12 and under won’t want to miss the sixth edition of the Recycle-Motion recycled content t-shirt. Various kids’ sizes will be available free, while supplies last. T-shirt give away sponsors are:

April 22 is Earth Day, the culmination of hundreds of activities and events around the nation created to draw attention to the importance of protecting our earth through awareness and appreciation of the environment. Earth Day is a time to create new global policies, local efforts and personal pledges to accelerate environmental progress. It is also a time to celebrate improvements we’ve already made. Not only Earth Day BUT Every Day is a time to act to protect our planet. Celebrating Earth Day Every Day means doing things that save energy, conserve water, reducing, reusing and recycling what we can and making choices that protect our environment. This year marks the 42nd Anniversary of Earth Day, which is sure to create great excitement around our communities.

Go Wild! Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run your television for 2 ½ hours.

Conserve water by turning faucets off completely. A dripping faucet can waste gallons of water if left to drip constantly.

Practice the 4 R’s Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Re-buy – Reduce what you buy, Reuse what you already have and Recycle what you no longer use by donating the items and remember to Recycle household items such as empty cans, bottles, newspaper, cardboard etc. When you must buy, purchase products that contain post-consumer recycled materials. These products are made with the materials we recycle every day.

Garbage Guru Tidbits – Size Matters

Residential trash, recycling service is provided to approximately 74,000 households each week in MMWA’s service area. This service is a manual service, which means that the collection worker is literally picking items up.

In one day, a worker may make 700-1,200 stops.

For this reason, residents are expected to comply with program size & weight restrictions.

Cans and bags must be no larger than 33 gallons in size and weigh no more than 50 lbs.

For complete rules, read The Loop Guide on www.recyclemotion.org or call MMWA or your municipal office for a free copy.

The impending arrival of April 1st means that yard waste services will start back up. No April Fools – the season is soon to arrive, just in time for warmer weather and the irresistible urge residents get to rake, mulch and spruce up their yards.

Yard waste services are offered by 14 of Mid Michigan Waste Authority’s 35 municipal members. That means residents of those communities can bag unwanted yard waste materials and set them at the curb for collection on their regular trash day from their first service date in April until the end of November. Communities with curbside residential yard waste service are:

Village of Birch Run

Bridgeport Township

Buena Vista Township

Carrollton Township

Village of Chesaning

James Township

Kochville Township

City of Saginaw

Saginaw Township

Village of St. Charles

Spaulding Township

Thomas Township

Tittabawassee Township

City of Zilwaukee

All materials must be placed in paper yard waste bags, available at most hardware and grocery stores, or in 33 gallon or smaller garbage containers that have a “Yard Waste Only” sticker attached. These stickers are available from participating community municipal offices or MMWA. No container or bag can weigh more than 50 lbs. or have materials extending more than 6” past the opening to keep collection workers safe.

Brush, which is made up of branches greater than 2” in diameter but less than 8”, is managed separately from yard waste. One 3’ x 4’ bundle of brush may be set out next to regular trash at anytime of the year. As well, a number of MMWA member communities offer limited-time brush drop-off site(s) or service. Call your community to see if offered.
