    Paint Handling
    Reduce

PaintEliminate the need for disposing of unwanted or unused paint by buying only the amount of paint required for your home project. Your local paint retailer can assist you in determining how much paint to buy.

    Reuse

Donate useable paint to a local high school drama department or community theatre group.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that builds homes for families in need. Usable paint is often needed for these projects as well as for resale in their discount materials warehouse store, ReStore Saginaw. To schedule an appointment to donate your usable paint call ReStore Saginaw at 754-9435.

    Recycle

Give old paint a new life through MMWA’s Paint ReNew program. Drop off acceptable paint at a Paint ReNew location for recycling.

    Here’s how it works:
    • Latex or oil based household paint only. Must be at least half full cans of household latex paint.
    • Paint must be in original container with label.
    • No larger than 5 gallon containers accepted.
    • No stains, varnishes, polishes, etc. These products are handled as household hazardous waste.
    • No rust preventative or plastic coating paints.
    • No automotive paints.
    Latex Paint

Nearly empty cans of latex paint can be easily disposed of at curbside using the following guidelines: Remove the lid and solidify the paint by mixing it with shredded newspaper, cat litter or a paint hardener, available at hardware stores. When dry and solid, leave lids off and throw both away with your regular trash.

    Oil Based Paint

This type of paint is not as easy to manage at home. Drop it off at a Paint ReNew Location or Household Hazardous Waste collection event.

    Propane Tanks

Propane TanksMost hardware and grocery stores, as well as some gas stations, offer propane tank refills or exchanges. Some may also offer tank disposal. Check the Yellow Pages for other locations. Call for details on disposal availability and fees. Unless noted, refill and disposal rates are for 20 lb. tanks only.

Used one-pound propane gas cylinders (i.e. Coleman propane gas camping cylinder) can be recycled with scrap metal with the help of the Coleman’s Green Keyâ. The Green Keyâ tool is a simple plastic device that, when inserted into an empty propane cylinder, will release any remaining fumes, rendering the cylinder completely empty, depressurized and ready to be recycled. More information about the Green Keyâ tool including a how-to video can be found on Coleman’s web page.

    Batteries/Rechargeable

Batteries/RechargeableRegular household batteries, such as AAA, AA, C, D and 9 volt, are now manufactured with virtually no heavy metals and may be safely disposed of in the trash. Some batteries, including hearing aid batteries, can be recycled. See listing below for various recycling options.

    Lead Acid Batteries

Lead acid batteries used in cars, boats, snowmobiles and ATV’s, are accepted for recycling at a number of retail stores and automotive service facilities selling new lead-acid batteries. A core charge of $10 – $15 is usually assessed by the retailer. Also check the Yellow Pages under Auto Parts, Scrap Yards, Recycling Drop-Off Centers or Car Batteries. (see automotive recycling).

    Rechargeable Batteries

Check the batteries in cordless power tools, laptop computers, cordless and cell phones, PDA’s, camcorders, and remote control toys. If they no longer hold a charge recycle them. The Call 2 Reclyce Corporation works with retail stores to collect rechargeable batteries for recycling. Call 877-2-RECYCLE or visit www.call2recycle.com for more information.
