Recycle Motion Quick Tips

Get a bin and get Into Recycle-Motion

  • Bins are available from your local government office
  • Use at least one “official” recycling bin from your municipal office. After that you can add more bins by converting any container, 32 gallon (or smaller), into a recycling bin by labeling it with a “Recyclables Only” sticker. Stickers are available at no charge from your local government office or Mid Michigan Waste Authority.
  • Use two bins – one for paper items, the other for plastic, glass, and metal containers.Click here for detailed information.

Make it easy on yourself

  • Place small recycling collection containers near trashcans throughout your home. Areas like bathrooms, home offices, and kitchens usually generate a lot of recyclable materials.
  • No need to protect paper from the weather by putting them in a plastic bag. It’s okay if the paper gets wet. If you use a bag to separate paper products from plastic, glass and metal containers, please use a paper bag. Easier yet, use 2 bins, one for paper products, one for containers. No need to bag materials when they are placed into separate bins.
  • It isn’t necessary to flatten metal cans or remove labels.
  • Maximize the space in recycling bins by flattening milk jugs and boxes.

  • Crushed Milk Jug

Want to be a Recycle-Motion champion?

  • Remove lids from all containers. Throw away plastic lids and recycle metal lids.
  • Keep recycling clean by rinsing containers.
  • Cut cardboard boxes into 2’x3’ sections so they will fit into the recycling truck.
  • Throw away greasy pizza boxes.
  • Keep plastic bags and foam products out of the recycling bin. Plastic bags get wrapped in the conveyor system at the recycling facility and cause equipment shutdowns. Reuse clean plastic bags or recycle them at a local participating store. Items like carryout containers, meat trays, and foam tableware are not recyclable. Put these items in the trash.
  • When shopping, take along your own bags to reduce the number of plastic bags you bring home.
