Bleach

Certain cleaning products like oven cleaners, drain openers, or polishes are classified as Household Hazardous Waste. Please be sure your cleaning products are properly disposed of.

Battery (rechargeable)

Rechargeable Batteries (including Li-lon, Ni-Cd, Ni-MH, Ni-ZN and SSLA/Pb) contain metals that pose risks to human health and the environment. Do NOT dispose of rechargeable batteries in the trash.

Take rechargeable batteries to a retail collection location or a household hazardous waste event.

Pumpkins

Best Option

Compost: Put this item in your backyard compost.

Other Options:

Yard Waste: Put this item in your yard waste.

Instructions: Pumpkins should be placed in your yard waste. Make sure your yard waste bags or cans weigh less than 50 pounds. (Hay bales and corn stalks are considered yard waste, and should be placed next to your yard waste cans or bags.)

Alternate ways to recycle:

  • Drop off your pumpkins to the 5Heart Earthworm Farm.
  • Feed the chickens – when you’re done with pumpkins, scrape out any candle wax and give them to a friend or neighbor with backyard chickens.
  • Compost in place – Scrape out any leftover wax, then smash your pumpkin and let them decompose in your garden or backyard soil.

Yard Waste

Propane tank

Best Option

Call the retailer where you purchased your propane tank or any propane dealer and inquire about “take-back” and recycling options. There is no curbside collection for this hazardous waste. Propane tanks are not accepted through MMWA’s household hazardous waste program.

Kerosene

Kerosene is considered hazardous waste and should never be dumped down the drain. Doing so will contaminate drinking water sources.

Paint

MMWA offers special waste drop off days for items like paint. The program runs from May through September and is free to residents of Saginaw County, Bethany Township, Village of Breckenridge, and Wheeler Township.

Latex and Water Based Paint

Trash: Put this item in your trash.

Instructions: 

  • You can dry up the contents by removing the lid and placing the can in a well-ventilated area until dry.
    • This method works best for cans with less than two inches of paint.
  • You can also mix paint with an absorbent, such as shredded paper, cat litter, or any product intended to solidify or clean up oil spills.
  • Allow the contents to completely dry then place your paint can on the curb next to your regular trash with the lid off the paint can (Priority Waste Communities) or in your trash cart (WM communities).
  • If you have multiple cans and live in a Priority Waste Community.
    • You can place them, lid off, in a box that is structurally sound meaning not ripped, torn or wet, and the box and its contents should weigh no more than 35 pounds. Each
      box of paint cans will be treated as one bulk item. You can set out up to two boxes of properly prepared paint cans.
    • If you set them out one at a time two cans should be collected each collection day. If
      you have multiple cans we recommend that you place them in a box that is structurally sound meaning not ripped, torn or wet, and the box and its contents should weigh no more than 35 pounds. Each box of paint cans will be treated as one bulk item. You can set out up to two boxes of properly prepared paint cans.

Paint and Stain (Oil-Based)

  • Oil-based paint and stain should not be placed curbside and can be disposed of via MMWA’s household special waste collection program along with other paint products like spray paint and latex paint.
