Recycling trucks from the City of Saginaw will also not be collecting on Wednesday.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has declared a state of emergency in Michigan as the state braces for extreme weather conditions and wind chills as low as negative 50 degrees.
While it is currently anticipated that collection services will be provided on Thursday, January 31 and Friday, February 1, the weather is being closely monitored to ensure that collection workers and communities stay safe. Residents in communities serviced on those days should refer to MMWA’s Facebook page and website, www.recyclemotion.org, for the most current announcements regarding inclement weather impacts.

As we face the most significant snowfall of the season, Mid Michigan Waste Authority would like to take this opportunity to remind our residents about our policies and protocols related to weather-related service impacts.
While collection workers make every effort to collect materials on schedule, they are cautioned against attempting service if driving conditions are hazardous. Safety is always MMWA and Waste Management’s shared priority.
Roads that are found to be impassable when a truck goes by will not have collection service reattempts until the community’s regular service day the following week. If trash or recycling is not collected by 6 pm, residents should pull their materials back from the road and put them out on their next trash day.
MMWA staff work closely with the Waste Management team throughout the day to get timely information about road conditions, and will keep its Facebook page and website updated with collection service impacts.
While we can’t control the weather and its impact on curbside collection services, there are some things residents can do to make sure their trash is picked up and drivers stay safe.
- Consider holding your trash and recycling until the following week if the weather is bad, especially when snow plows are running. Passing plows may cover your materials with snow or push them away from the curb. Drivers cannot collect materials that have been covered with snow or knocked over by plows.
- Do not use white trash bags if there is snow on the ground, as the driver may not see them.
- Do not place garbage cans on top of snow piles or icy patches.
- Retrieve your cans and bins as soon as possible after collection.
- Please have patience. Our aim is to collect your trash and recycling in a timely manner but unfortunately some days we cannot do that if we want to keep our drivers and our communities safe.
If you have any questions about trash collection during inclement weather, please contact MMWA at (989) 781-9555.

The upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday on Monday, January 21, will not cause any delays in trash and recycling services provided to the 34 communities served by the Mid Michigan Waste Authority.
Residents should prepare and set out materials on their regularly scheduled collection day.
Holidays that do impact solid waste pickup are New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Service is not impacted when the holiday falls on a weekend.

Now that the excitement of the holiday season is over, area residents are facing the chore of putting away their decorations and disposing of their fresh cut Christmas trees.
Residents in all 34 communities served by the Mid Michigan Waste Authority can put their fresh Christmas trees to the curb by 7 am on their regular trash day throughout the month of January.
Residents do not need to remove ornaments, tinsel, garland or other decorative items, and trees can be put to the curb with or without a tree bag.
Trees that are frozen to the ground or covered with snow will not be collected until they can be safely accessed by the driver. Large or heavy trees may have to be picked up by the bulk truck, and in those cases, trees should be collected within two days of the resident’s regular service day.
The service applies only to Christmas trees that have been used as indoor holiday décor. State law prohibits yard waste and vegetation from being disposed of in the landfill; however, the ban does not apply to Christmas trees. Artificial trees may be placed to the curb as a bulky item at any time of year.
Residents who would like to dispose of unwanted Christmas tree lights can take part in the MMWA Holiday Light Recycling Drive, which runs through Jan. 15, 2019. Lights may be dropped off at several locations throughout mid-Michigan
